Thinking Beyond Business

What are the SDGs and How They Are Connected to My Business

In 2015, all UN members approved a framework that sets a common language and establishes shared goals to create a better, more sustainable world by the year 2030. They came up with a list of 17 aspirational goals such as combat hunger, poverty, climate change, gender inequality, and responsible consumption and production, among other issues. The SDGs represent an action plan for the planet to improve living conditions.

Each goal comprises a series of targets. Together they add to 169 targets that guide us on the type of initiatives we should engage to achieve each of the SDGs.

The objective is that governments, nonprofits, and the private sector collaborate to successfully achieve these goals. The vision is that we have the opportunity to drive societal change and business growth responsibly.

Given that this framework provides common language worldwide, most global companies report their sustainability in terms of each specific goal. For example, Unilever’s sustainability strategy is directly tied to the SDGs.

How are the SDGs connected to your business?

All businesses affect the environment and society in one way or another. It is your decision how you want that impact to be. You can choose to be part of the solution and therefore collaborate to achieve the SDGs.

When communicating your initiatives and your impact in relation to the SDGs, you send a clear and straightforward message to your stakeholders, that you are a responsible business collaborating to solve the world’s most pressing problems. You will open a channel of communication with conscious individuals that will recognize your activism and they will have a more clear understanding of your intentions. Your business will be rewarded with their support. As for individuals that are not yet versed in the SDG’s language, you may plant a seed of curiosity, and you may even inspire them with your collaborative way of doing business.
